Rangiora Borough School Redwood
Rangiora Borough School, Canterbury

Standing proudly in the heart of Rangiora, this giant redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) has become a much-loved symbol of Rangiora Borough School—a school that has served the local community since 1873. Believed to have been planted around 1860, when the land was owned by William Sanson, the tree predates the school itself and has stood watch over generations of learners.
Winner of the inaugural Waimakariri Tree of the Year competition, this magnificent redwood is the focal point of the school grounds. A large stage now encircles its base, creating a special space for outdoor learning, performances, or simply enjoying time beneath its sheltering branches.
The redwood has featured in school designs for more than a century, and today a stylised version of the tree is proudly worn on the school uniform—a daily reminder of connection, continuity, and pride.
