The New Zealand Tree Register (NZTR) holds detailed information on notable trees in New Zealand.

For generations, travellers have looked to Te Herenga Ora—this enduring cluster of tī kōuka/cabbage trees (Cordyline australis)—as a natural beacon, guiding their way through the once-treacherous swamplands of Canterbury. Standing proudly in the grounds of Burnside High School, these trees have been more than mere flora; they have been silent sentinels of history, witnessing the footsteps of early Māori and settlers alike as they navigated the land.

Named Te Herenga Ora by Waitaha and Ngāi Tahu, these trees once marked the safest route from Rāpaki and Te Waihora to the great Ngāi Tahu pā of Kaiapoi. Their significance has never faded. Today, they continue to shape the identity of the community, inspiring the school crest and motto: Recte Sic Dirige Cursum—"Along this path direct your journey correctly."

What makes Te Herenga Ora truly remarkable is its living legacy. It is not just a single tree but a self-sustaining cluster, constantly renewing itself as older trees pass and new ones take their place. This cycle of renewal ensures that the landmark remains intact, a testament to endurance, resilience, and the deep-rooted connection between land and people.

Lovingly cared for and protected, Te Herenga Ora is more than just a group of trees—it is a symbol of history, guidance, and continuity. A vote for Te Herenga Ora honours a landmark that has directed journeys for centuries.
